The Delta: Yesterday & Tomorrow

Travel through the dynamic history of the Delta. Discover local history through the Delta swamp, Agricultural history, the life of founder Greenwood Leflore, and a few items that might surprise you like
a Mastodon and a Mosasaurus.

Children’s Discovery Room:

Dinosaurs, tigers, and farm fun all in the Children’s discovery room. A world of wonder awaits the curious child in our playroom.

The Museum partnered with Junior Auxiliary of Greenwood to create the Children’s Discovery Room geared toward our youngest visitors. Ideal for children who can crawl, but especially for toddlers, the space allows for children to shop at a Farmer’s Market and Grocery Store, participate in art and craft projects, all with a focus on the Mississippi Delta.

Military History:

Explore the effect of various wars on Greenwood and its citizens and exhibits uniforms, veteran lists, victory posters, and artifacts from the war and the home front.

The Battle of Fort Pemberton near Greenwood was a significant engagement of the Union’s Yazoo Pass Expedition, an attempt by Major General Ulysses S. Grant to bypass Vicksburg’s river defenses to take the city. There is also a Civil War-era cannon and a model of the battle of nearby Fort Pemberton.

The Star of the West, an ocean steamer that received the first shots of the Civil War near Ft. Sumter, met its final fate in March 1863 during the Yazoo Pass Expedition.

Welcome Y’all! The Museum of the Mississippi Delta is at the crossroads of regional history and art. The Museum boasts a room dedicated to the agricultural history of the region with farming implements on display. A Civil War era cannon, with the nickname of Lady Polk, and a model of nearby Fort Pemberton are featured in the Leflore County military history exhibit, focusing on t he effect of various wars on Greenwood and its citizens.

Artifacts and furniture from Malmaison, the home of former Choctaw Chief and Senator Greenwood Leflore are on display.

Across the exhibit hall is a walk through diorama of a Mississippi swamp and the Children’s Discovery Room.

The Museum is home to a treasure of Southern art by the most celebrated artists of our time.
